Quick post since I have to leave the house really quickly!
KODO taiko members are visiting the community center for a pot luck tonight I originally wanted to make some vietnamese style spring rolls for some healthy but someone else got the same idea hahah XD
I decided to make fried dumplings: vegetarian style and pork.
You can see the recipe for the vegetarian ones over at one of my favourite blogs, No Recipes: http://norecipes.com/blog/vegetarian-gyoza-potstickers/
To make them really vegan-friendly though, I omitted the egg. I also didn’t have cabbage handy so I used nappa cabbage. After tasting it though, I definitely think 3 shiitake mushrooms is NOT enough since it tasted like I was only eating quinoa. Even after adding 5 of them, the ratio of quinoa to mushroom was too much. Next time I’ll probably half the quinoa, double the mushrooms and maybe up the garlic/onion depending on how it tasted then.
The pork dumplings were made with minced pork, shiitake mushrooms, 4 stalks of green onions, garlic, salt and pepper. My dad helped me fry them since I was short on time today. He prefers just crisping the bottom side of the dumplings before steaming while I like frying the two sides. Still not a super good dumpling maker yet but at least I don’t think I had any open ones
The vegetarian dumplings!
Phew, off to get ready now! Check out KODO taiko drummers in the meantime! If you’re in Montreal, I encourage you to check out the Kaguyahime ballet. They’ll be playing there more as support musicians but still incredible nonetheless!

All those dumplings…looks heavenly!
Haha thank you! They’re really easy to make and freeze pretty well for a quick meal
There are never leftovers to freeze in our house. I haven’t mastered folding them as nicely as you!
Haha well I usually only cook for myself and with winter coming, I get pretty lazy ;D
I love your home recipes on your blog though! Looking to try some pumpkin related ones since I’ve never cooked it
Thanks so much! There will be more pumpkin recipes coming, I Have tons of it!
looks amazing! I’m not a big fan of dumplings, but maybe that’s because I haven’t had amazing ones yet. I’d like to make more at home one day, maybe have a dumplings party haha.
I’d be all up for a dumpling party! XD We should make some when you get back :3
I’ve been thinking about learning to make xiao long bao (soup filled dumplings) though… is there anyone you know who might be able to give you a recipe/instructions how to make them?
IF there isn’t, we can always Google one haha. I don’t really like xiao long bao because the soup always ends up burning my tongue
maybe if we made some with extra shiitake mushrooms, it’d be delicious haha
You have to nibble the dumpling skin, then drink the soup! Not just munch on it hahaha
I figured becuase you’re like in the home country where XLB were invented, you’d be able to get an authentic recipe for it because I REALLY WANNA MAKE SOME
Also any moon cake recipe/instructions?
I’ll look into finding recipes. As for mooncakes, the people who invited us gave us the recipe. I just didn’t know enough Chinese to understand anything they said other than Glutinous Rice Flour.
